Welcome to the GIS Unit. Our unit is responsible for managing land and infrastructure within the region. We serve as the Secretariat for the South Tarawa Access Road Committee, overseeing the coordination of meetings, communication among members, record management, logistical support, and the implementation of decisions. Additionally, our GIS & RS Unit is tasked with maintaining and updating cadastral and topographic maps, preparing land use plans, and acquiring satellite imagery for Kiribati. We conduct coastal change detection, analyze vegetation land cover, and handle mapping information requests. Our responsibilities also include preparing diagrams for subleases and leases and providing site plans for development applications. We are committed to supporting needs and ensuring the effective management of land resources.

At present, the GIS&RS Units is staffed with 5 members, including 3 permanent employees and 2 temporary staff. Each team member holds distinct responsibilities aimed at maintaining the high standard of service provided to customers.

GIS&RS Main Responsibilities

  • Update Cadastral/Topographic planning mapping database for all islands from current surveys and other sources
  • Drawing up and preparation of a cadastral land use plans for planning purposes
  • Update the General Land Use Plan
  • Acquire satellite imagery specifically for Kiribati by sourcing data from diverse providers or platforms.
  • Make a Coastal Change Detection of all outer islands to detect changes and determine which areas are most at risk due to the effects of climate change.
  • Conduct a comprehensive analysis of vegetation land cover across all islands to evaluate changes in vegetative areas, identifying regions where vegetation has decreased, remained stable, or increased over time.
  • Responding to Mapping Information requests from different users.
  • Carry out other major duties as may specified from Senior Officers
  • Preparation of subleases and leases diagrams.
  • Providing a site plan for Land Development Application Form/Seawall Application Form
  • Answer general queries relating to Mapping
